Teen Eagle Allie Hall responds to a newspaper article
To the Editor of the Tennessean,
I am a Middle Tennessee High School student and member of Teen Eagle Forum. I respectfully disagree with your article entitled "How do We Save Our Children?"
I viewed the names and occupations of the people whom you invited to participate in your discussion. I don't understand why you chose those particular individuals. Are they good at handling unruly children? It would have been a greater community service, I think, if you would have invited credible authorities, such as the founders of Growing Families International, along with parents who have successfully raised responsible citizens.
Furthermore, I believe that guns are not evil, they are simply tools. Heat is also a tool and is responsible for hundreds of deaths each year. Used appropriately and in moderation heat is a good thing. The same is true for guns.
Gun crimes committed by young people is only a symptom. At the root of the problem are weak families. It is the parent's, & not the government's or community's, responsibility to teach, discipline or to raise children. Only when parents can not or will not perform their duties should the government/communities intervene.
In your 11-2-05 issue of The Tennessean, Mr. Lewis commented, "?I don't care what morals & ethics you install in your kids at home, peer pressure is stronger than dynamite." Students should be offended by that statement. I know I am as a 15-year-old. In the past I have resisted peer pressure many times, as often as I need to.
I am the second oldest of 5 children. I have a 17-year-old brother and a 13-year-old brother. One has a shotgun & the other a rifle. My parents taught us all to respect and value human life. The Bible states in Proverbs 22:6, "Train up a child in the way he should go: & when he is old he will not depart from it."
When mothers & fathers work together to raise their children in LOVE & discipline, purposefully teaching them virtues, along with "what you sow is what you reap," & that poor behavior results in consequences and good behavior often has rewards, then those families do not need D.A.R.E & related programs.
Taking Christianity out of government schools was a HUGE MISTAKE. Without the foundation that there is One True Living God, there are no absolutes. Who is to say that murder is wrong? If God does not exist, as society would like to believe, then people live by what they determine is right (which could be anything). Without direct guidance from parents, children learn from society. Society is teaching them that life is meaningless that is has no value.
Think about it, society has embraced the Evolution THEORY, that we all evolved by chance instead recognizing that we have a loving Caring Creator. Also, society says life is worthless by allowing abortion, which is really the legal slaughter of innocent life. Luke 1:41 SAYS: "And it came to pass, that, when Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb??
If guns/knives are more tightly restricted, then our government will eventually need to regulate rocks & shoe laces, because almost any item can be used as a weapon if the object is to do so.
Thanks for Your Attention,
