Less Abstinence, more abortion

COMMENT:  We keep hearing that this administration wants to reduce the need for abortion.  Someone please explain to me how that happens if the funds for abstinence-based education are reduced or eliminated?????  Do you suppose there is an agenda here???

1. Obama White House Urges Tax-Funded Abortion-on-Demand in D.C.
By Kathleen Gilbert

WASHINGTON, D.C., May 8, 2009 (LifeSiteNews.com) - President Obama's budget recommendations unveiled yesterday are being criticized by the National Right to Life Committee for recommending the re-introduction of taxpayer-funded abortion in Washington, D.C.

The White House submission urges the House and Senate to repeal a law known as the Dornan Amendment that prevents tax-funded abortion, except for cases of rape, incest, or threat to the mother's life, in the District of Columbia for several years.

Because Congress holds legislative authority over the District of Columbia, the district's budget must be appropriated by Congress through an annual appropriations bill.  The White House called for the ban to be replaced with a requirement that would apply only to funds specifically contributed for federal program purposes.

"If Congress goes along with the Obama proposal, the predictable result will be tax funding of several thousand elective abortions annually, including roughly 1,000 abortions annually that would not otherwise occur," said Douglas Johnson, legislative director for the National Right to Life Committee (NRLC).

"Any member of Congress who votes for a bill that contains the White House proposal is, in reality, voting for tax-funded abortion on demand with congressionally appropriated funds."

>From 1988 until 1993, Congress annually included the ban until it was lost for three years, then restored in 1996.  While the ban was not in effect, congressional debates cited evidence that indicated the city's abortion-funding policy was among the most permissive in the nation.  Elizabeth Reveal, D.C. budget director at the time, told the Philadelphia Inquirer that "the District's government has a policy of funding abortion on demand and does not attempt to determine the circumstances of the pregnancy."

2.  Conservatives Angered Over Obama's Plan to Eliminate Abstinence-based Sex Education
Monday, May 11, 2009

By Pete Winn, Senior Writer/Editor
(CNSNews.com) - Conservatives say a battle may be looming over the demise of abstinence-education funding.

President Barack Obama’s budget adjustment request last week proposed eliminating $138 million in spending on abstinence-only education, and re-directing the money to a new teen pregnancy “reduction” program that is expected to utilize the ‘abstinence-plus” or “comprehensive” sex-ed approach – one that teaches teens how to use condoms and birth control.

David Christensen, senior director of legislative affairs at the Family Research Council, says that the Obama administration is taking the wrong path if it wants to  reduce teen pregnancy.

“Unfortunately the president’s budget adjustment would completely eliminate abstinence-education grants for programs that are clearly working for students across the country,” Christensen told CNSNews.com.

Obama specifically proposes eliminating a $38 million program that makes grants to states, and $100 million in funding o be spent for abstinence education administered by the Health and Human Services Department (HHS).

Robert Rector, a senior analyst at The Heritage Foundation, a conservative think-tank, said the president’s move came at the request of abortion-rights groups, including Planned Parenthood.

3. Obama budget cuts funds for abstinence-only sex education

By Sharon Jayson, USA TODAY
President Obama's new budget would eliminate most money for abstinence-only sex education and shift it to teen pregnancy prevention — a U-turn in what has been more than a decade of sex education policy in the USA.
The proposed budget, sent to Congress last Thursday, "reflects the research," says Melody Barnes, director of the team that coordinates White House
domestic policy.
"In any area where Americans want to confront a problem, they want solutions they know will work, as opposed to programming they know hasn't proven to be successful. Given where we've been in recent years, I think this is a very important moment," she says.
Abstinence-only sex education programs, which emphasize a no-sex-until-marriage message, received almost $1.3 billion in federal dollars from fiscal years 2001-2009, according to the Office of Management and Budget. At the same time, studies of abstinence-only programs have shown little success; the most often-cited study, released in 2007, was congressionally mandated and federally funded and found that abstinence-only programs don't prevent or delay teen sex.
Valerie Huber of the National Abstinence Education Association says that 2007 study was "an early study about early programs. Things have changed."
Two weeks ago, she says her organization briefed congressional aides about an analysis of studies that she says refutes arguments that abstinence education doesn't affect sexual behavior.

A Baby, Please. Blond, Freckles -- Hold the Colic

Laboratory Techniques That Screen for Diseases in Embryos Are Now Being Offered to Create Designer Children

Want a daughter with blond hair, green eyes and pale skin?

A Los Angeles clinic says it will soon help couples select both gender and physical traits in a baby when they undergo a form of fertility treatment. The clinic, Fertility Institutes, says it has received "half a dozen" requests for the service, which is based on a procedure called pre-implantation genetic diagnosis, or PGD

While PGD has long been used for the medical purpose of averting life-threatening diseases in children, the science behind it has quietly progressed to the point that it could potentially be used to create designer babies. It isn't clear that Fertility Institutes can yet deliver on its claims of trait selection. But the growth of PGD, unfettered by any state or federal regulations in the U.S., has accelerated genetic knowledge swiftly enough that pre-selecting cosmetic traits in a baby is no longer the stuff of science fiction.

"It's technically feasible and it can be done," says Mark Hughes, a pioneer of the PGD process and director of Genesis Genetics Institute, a large fertility laboratory in Detroit. However, he adds that "no legitimate lab would get into it and, if they did, they'd be ostracized."

But Fertility Institutes disagrees. "This is cosmetic medicine," says Jeff Steinberg, director of the clinic that is advertising gender and physical trait selection on its Web site. "Others are frightened by the criticism but we have no problems with it."

PGD is a technique whereby a three-day-old embryo, consisting of about six cells, is tested in a lab to see if it carries a particular genetic disease. Embryos free of that disease are implanted in the mother's womb. Introduced in the 1990s, it has allowed thousands of parents to avoid passing on deadly disorders to their children.

Designer baby

But PGD is starting to be used to target less-serious disorders or certain characteristics -- such as a baby's gender -- that aren't medical conditions. The next controversial step is to select physical traits for cosmetic reasons.

"If we're going to produce children who are claimed to be superior because of their particular genes, we risk introducing new sources of discrimination" in society, says Marcy Darnovsky, associate executive director of the Center for Genetics and Society, a nonprofit public interest group in Oakland, Calif. If people use the method to select babies who are more likely to be tall, the thinking goes, then people could effectively be enacting their biases against short people.

In a recent U.S. survey of 999 people who sought genetic counseling, a majority said they supported prenatal genetic tests for the elimination of certain serious diseases. The survey found that 56% supported using them to counter blindness and 75% for mental retardation.

More provocatively, about 10% of respondents said they would want genetic testing for athletic ability, while another 10% voted for improved height. Nearly 13% backed the approach to select for superior intelligence, according to the survey conducted by researchers at the New York University School of Medicine.

There are significant hurdles to any form of genetic enhancement. Most human traits are controlled by multiple genetic factors, and knowledge about their complex workings, though accelerating, is incomplete. And traits such as athleticism and intelligence are affected not just by DNA, but by environmental factors that cannot be controlled in a lab.

While many countries have banned the use of PGD for gender selection, it is permitted in the U.S. In 2006, a survey by the Genetics and Public Policy Center at Johns Hopkins University found that 42% of 137 PGD clinics offered a gender-selection service.

Outrage over Planned Parenthood Christmas 'gift' cards

'It is difficult to think of a more tasteless, ghoulish thing to give anyone'

Planned Parenthood, which in past years has promoted a "Choice on Earth" abortion campaign during the Christmas season, has a new outreach, offering Christmas gift certificates to be used for abortions.

"It is difficult to think of a more tasteless, ghoulish thing to give anyone. I refuse to refer to these financial instruments as gifts as they are nothing more than a legal way to put a hit out on someone," said a participant in a forum at the online Lone Star Times, where the plan was reported.

"Planned Parenthood, this generation's King Herod, you know, the guy who ordered the mass slaughter of babies when Jesus was born," added WND columnist Jill Stanek, who also documented the plan on her blog.

According to the Lone Star Times, the nation's leading player in the abortion industry is "celebrating the most important crisis pregnancy of all time by selling gift certificates, perfect for the woman who has everything but moral fiber … And it's so much easier than finding the perfect 'Baby's First Christmas' ornament."

According to WISH-TV in Indianapolis, the controversial plan has people talking.

"People are making really tough decisions about putting gas in their car and food on their table, so we know that many women especially put healthcare at the bottom of their list to do," Chrystal Struben-Hall, an official for the abortion business, told the station.

The report said the certificates come in $25 increments and can be used for everything from birth control to $58 examinations that include breast exams and pap tests.

"They can be seen for sexually transmitted disease screenings, HIV tests and general prostate exams and those kinds of things," said Struben-Hall.

But can they be used for abortions?

Of course, Struben-Hall said. "We decided not to put restrictions on."

Stanek has campaigned to alert the American public of President-elect Barack Obama's extreme pro-abortion position. In fact, Obama considered partial birth abortion a "legitimate medical procedure" and opposed a requirement that abortionists provide life-preserving care for infants who survive abortion attempts, because of the burden it would impose on the abortionist.

How a Pro-Life Doctor Overcomes Abortion With Truth

How a Pro-Life Doctor Overcomes Abortion With Truth

by Paul Nowak
LifeNews.com Staff Writer
March 24, 2008

As an OB/GYN, Dr. William Lile will take part in the miracle of birth more times than many of us will ever get to witness it. Medical practitioners in Dr. Lile's specialty have been immensely important to the pro-life cause for providing insight and information into the science and awe-inspiring wonders of pregnancy and birth.

However, Dr. Lile is also aware of the terrible truth that it is his peers who perform most of the abortions in the U.S., and he is going the extra mile to let the truth be known about God's miracle of life and abortion's brutality.

The face of evil

Although his respect for the sanctity of life began in childhood, Dr. Lile received a new perspective on abortion during his medical training when he came face to face with peers who had succumbed to the temptation of easy money.

During his residency at Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola and the University of Florida, Dr. Lile was asked by abortionist Bo Bagenholm what he believed happened to aborted babies. Professing his belief in the soul, God's mercy and the infants' innocence, Dr. Lile said he believed they were welcomed into heaven.

"He told me, 'I've sent more souls to heaven than most people, according to your religion,'" recalled Dr. Lile. "There was no guilt."

"In my opinion my peers initially get involved with abortions for the quick money, and then it becomes a matter of ego," added Dr. Lile. "I find it amazing how these people are put on a pedestal, and thanked by other doctors for doing a procedure they are uncomfortable doing
themselves."

From death into life

After completing is residency in 1999, Dr. Lile began looking for a practice. As it turned out, a practice near Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola was available – Bo Bagenholm's practice, complete with a second-floor surgical abortion facility. At the time, the practice was the third-largest provider of abortions by volume in Escambia County.

Dr. Lile and his partner arranged to purchase the practice, including all of the equipment and retention of the staff. The purchase included a no-compete agreement that forbade Bagenholm from practicing medicine within the tri-county area around Pensacola for two years.

On the first day under the new ownership, Dr. Lile and his partner announced to their employees, who had previously been involved in the practice's abortion services, that not only would they no longer provide abortion, but referral of women to other abortion businesses would be grounds for termination. On that day, a 20-year legacy of death in the building was ended.

Turning abortionists' tools against them

Dr. Lile still remembers going up to the second floor surgical center for the first time.

"It was one of the most chilling feelings I have ever had," he said, recalling the day he first saw the table, suction machine and tools together where so many lives had been taken. "There was a palpable feeling of coldness."

"My goal had been to stop the practitioner," said Dr. Lile. "But it was then I realized that God can take anything and use it for good."

Today, in addition to serving his patients at his practice Dr. Lile makes time to use that same equipment in a presentation he calls God's Miracle of Life, which he has given across the country over the past several years.

The presentation uses in-vitro video and ultrasounds to show audiences the development of the child in the womb. Dr. Lile also explains how advances in medicine have even made prenatal surgery a reality. In particular, he discusses the case of "Baby Samuel," the subject of the famous photo of a 21-week old unborn child holding a surgeon's finger during a prenatal operation to correct spina bifida.

With the wonders of the womb still fresh in the audience's mind, Dr. Lile then takes those same abortionist's tools that were used by their previous owner to take lives, and uses them to give bloodless demonstrations of just how abortions are done. The steps and instruments of death involved in first-, second- and third-trimester abortions -- including the infamous partial-birth abortion procedure -- are shown to the audience and explained.

His unique presentation exposes the risks, lies and dangers of abortion, such as the complexity of a partial-birth abortion which has been claimed as a "life saving" procedure by its practitioners, and the suction machine's ability to crush a steel can—a can so strong it could support a grown man standing on it.

"What I've found is there are those who are pro-life and those who are pro-abortion," explains Dr. Lile. "We need to target those in the middle who are undecided."

He adds that his presentation makes his audience aware of the blatant murder and brutality of abortion, by letting them see the miraculous design of the child in the womb contrasted by the cold, harsh methods of their destruction.

"They can then put two and two together," said Dr. Lile.

While the demands of his practice limit his availability to speak to groups in person, Dr. Lile's presentation has been produced on DVD that is available from Amazon.com. He also maintains a web site, www.ProLifeDoc.org, and his demonstration of a partial-birth abortion has been posted on YouTube and Google Video for the public to view for free.
